La geometría all-trans del sistema trieno puede originarse por isomerización fotoquímica o térmica del calcitriol y aumentar durante la síntesis, el almacenamiento o la exposición a la luz. Presenta fórmula molecular C27H44O3 y peso molecular 416.6, con CAS 73837-24-8. Dado que los isómeros geométricos muestran respuestas UV muy próximas, su caracterización suele requerir LC-MS/MS con separación quiral o de fase reversa de alta resolución, complementada por RMN y, cuando procede, GC-MS tras derivatización.
