Monomethyl ether hydroquinone (MEHQ) is a common stabilizer-derived impurity in methyl acrylate, presenting as trace phenolic species that strongly inhibit free radical polymerization and can alter polymerization kinetics, residual monomer levels, and color stability. Typical concentrations range from low ppm to several hundred ppm depending on storage and purification. Analytical identification and quantification are routinely performed by GC-MS, GC-FID after derivatization, or HPLC with UV detection, often supported by SPE cleanup. Removal strategies include careful vacuum distillation, adsorption on activated carbon or silica, and controlled washing protocols to meet stringent purity specifications for downstream polymerization processes.
