Description

Palmitic Acid, CAS 57-10-3, is a straight-chain saturated fatty acid of the lipophilic carboxylic acid class with molecular formula C16H32O2 and molecular weight 256.42 g/mol. It commonly arises as a lipid matrix constituent, hydrolytic degradation product of triacylglycerols, or residual process impurity in oleochemical and pharmaceutical manufacture. Because of its low volatility and strong adsorption to chromatographic surfaces, quantification often requires derivatization followed by GC-MS or LC-MS/MS, with capillary GC-FID also used for fatty acid profiling. Its occurrence is generally evaluated as a compositional impurity rather than a genotoxic concern.
