Description

Clonidine EP Impurity B, also designated Clonidine Related Compound A or acetylclonidine, is a structurally defined process impurity of clonidine with the molecular formula C11H11Cl2N3O and molecular weight 272.13 g/mol; CAS 54707-71-0. It is an acylated clonidine analogue bearing a methyl ketone function, consistent with formation during synthetic intermediates handling or acylation-related side reactions rather than simple oxidative degradation. Owing to its close chromatographic and mass spectral proximity to the parent drug, characterization commonly relies on RP-LC coupled with UV, LC-MS/MS, and, when needed, HRMS or NMR confirmation. Its presence is relevant to impurity profiling under pharmacopeial specifications and ICH Q3A/Q3B assessment.
