Methyl ester of Obeticholic acid is a synthetic bile acid and has complementary mechanisms of action, this acid is a farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist that is active in a wide variety of pathways, it decreases bile acid synthesis, resulting in less buildup of toxic bile acids and less cholestatic damage.
