Description
Also known as Metoprolol Succinate EP Impurity G, Metoprolol Tartarate EP Impurity G, 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenol, Tyrosol or 2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)ethanol, Metoprolol has been given FDA approval to treat hypertension, atrial fibrillation/flutter, myocardial infarction, and angina. Supraventricular tachycardia and thyroid storm are examples of off-label applications. There are formulations for oral and intravenous administration. Oral formulations for both immediate and prolonged release are available. The use of beta-blockers in the treatment of the aforementioned disorders is debatable. Additionally, there is conflicting evidence regarding the best beta-blocker to use in treating a given condition. Metoprolol's mechanism of action, adverse event profile, pharmacology, monitoring, and significant interactions will be highlighted in this activity, which is important for members of the interprofessional team treating patients with disorders where it is clinically useful.
