Can Allura Red cause cancer?
Synthetic food colours have been shown to cause DNA damage in rats. Unpublished results from my research team demonstrate that Allura Red, or Red 40, and Tartrazine, or Yellow 5, can induce DNA damage in colon cancer cells at higher doses and for longer periods of time in vitro in a controlled lab setting.
