Balsalazide Impurities

Balsalazide is used to treat:

• Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis – Helps reduce inflammation in the colon.
• Maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis – Prevents disease flare-ups.
• Off-label use in Crohn’s disease – Occasionally used, though mesalamine is more commonly preferred.

Balsalazide is not mesalamine (5-ASA) itself, but it is a prodrug of mesalamine.
