Pravastatin is a lipid-lowering agent belonging to the statin class of drugs. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. By blocking this enzyme, pravastatin reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, while modestly increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
Unlike some statins, pravastatin is hydrophilic, which may result in fewer muscle-related side effects and limited penetration across the blood–brain barrier.
It is administered orally as tablets, usually once daily in the evening.
Indications include:
