Cyfluthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide and common household pesticide. It is a complex organic compound and the commercial product is sold as a mixture of isomers. Like most pyrethroids, it is highly toxic to fish and invertebrates, but it is far less toxic to mammals when used at approved application rates. Technically, commercial cyfluthrin is a stereoisomeric blend with multiple chiral centers that produce cis and trans isomers, and its primary mode of action is disruption of voltage gated sodium channels in insect nerve membranes leading to hyperexcitation and paralysis. Physicochemical properties important for handling and formulation include low aqueous solubility, high lipophilicity, low vapor pressure, susceptibility to hydrolysis and photodegradation under environmental conditions, and metabolism in vertebrates that proceeds mainly by ester hydrolysis and oxidative pathways. Analytical monitoring is commonly performed by GC or LC coupled to mass spectrometry with isomer resolution to quantify individual isomers and degradation products.
Technical grade cyfluthrin is supplied as an isomeric active ingredient and typical specifications allocate the majority of the material to the combined cyfluthrin isomers, commonly in the range of 85 to 95 percent by weight for technical formulations. Related substances and process impurities include unreacted starting materials, minor stereoisomeric byproducts and oxidative or hydrolytic degradation products; individual related compounds are often controlled at low single digit percent levels, for example 0.1 to 3.0 percent each, with total identified impurities and related compounds typically limited to under about 8 to 10 percent for commercial technical material. Related pyrethroid compounds that may appear as trace cross contaminants or as formulation analogs include cypermethrin, deltamethrin and permethrin, but these are distinct molecules and any cross presence is normally constrained to low parts per hundred or lower by specification. Routine quality control focuses on isomer ratio, assay of total active ingredient, limits for specified impurities and absence of toxic byproducts.
Cyfluthrin is used as a broad spectrum insecticide for domestic pest control, structural treatments, public health vector control and certain agricultural applications; it controls crawling and flying insects by contact and residual action when formulated and applied according to label instructions.
Commercial cyfluthrin is a mixture of stereoisomers of a synthetic pyrethroid, formulated as a technical concentrate containing typically 85 to 95 percent total active cyfluthrin isomers by weight, with the remainder made up of formulation solvents, carriers and low level related substances and process impurities that are specified and limited by quality control.
Cyfluthrin can be hazardous to pets if misused; some veterinary formulations for dogs exist but exposure to concentrated or non veterinary formulations can cause neurologic signs, and it is particularly dangerous to cats; always follow product labeling and consult a veterinarian before using any insecticide on or around pets.
Cyfluthrin is sometimes encountered under the alternate spelling cyfluthrine and is marketed under various trade names by different manufacturers, so consult the product label or supplier documentation for the specific commercial name used.
