Racecadotril, also known by the brand name Hidrasec, is an antisecretory agent used to treat acute diarrhea, especially in children and adults. Unlike traditional antidiarrheals that affect gut motility, racecadotril acts by reducing intestinal hypersecretion without slowing intestinal transit.
It is a prodrug that gets converted in the body to its active metabolite thiorphan, which inhibits enkephalinase — an enzyme that breaks down enkephalins. This inhibition prolongs the action of enkephalins, thereby reducing secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestine.
