Rotigotine, commercially known as Neupro, is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist specifically indicated for the management and treatment of Parkinson's disease and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). The medication comes in a transdermal patch, which means it is applied to the skin and slowly released into the body over a period of time to help manage symptoms. It works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, thus mimicking the activity of dopamine, a naturally occurring neurotransmitter involved in regulating movement and mood among other functions. Using a patch delivery system allows for a steady release of Rotigotine, making its effect more constant than oral medications.

Rotigotine synthesis usually entails a series of complex chemical reactions, and this process may lead to the formation of various impurities and related compounds. There are four main impurities that are present in Rotigotine viz., Impurity A, Impurity B, Impurity C and Impurity D. At certain stages during synthesis, there can be the formation of these impurities which must be kept under certain industry-specified limits for the drug to be safe for use. Presence of excessive impurities may affect the efficacy and safety of the drug.
Rotigotine is used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). It helps to manage the symptoms of these conditions such as tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with movement in Parkinson’s disease, and unpleasant sensations in the legs and the urge to move them in RLS.
Rotigotine is administered through a transdermal patch which is applied directly to the skin. The patch allows for a slow and steady release of medication into the body.
If you miss a dose, apply the missed patch as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply two doses at the same time or extra patches to make up for a missed dose.
The common side effects of Rotigotine include nausea, vomiting,
sleepiness, dizziness, application site reactions, and increased sweating. If these side effects persist, consult your healthcare provider.
