Con fórmula molecular C7H7NO3 y peso molecular de 153,14 g/mol, puede originarse por arrastre de isómeros de síntesis o por vías de desaminación y reordenamiento durante la degradación de derivados salicilatos. Su carácter ácido-base polar, casi zwitteriónico, y la función amino aromática favorecen la separación por LC en fase reversa o con par iónico. La detección a nivel traza suele requerir LC-MS/MS, MS de alta resolución y, cuando procede, confirmación ortogonal por RMN. Se considera una impureza de proceso estructuralmente relacionada, no una especie mutagénica alertante según ICH M7.
