En la química del valproato se considera una impureza de proceso estructuralmente relacionada o un subproducto asociado a degradación, derivado de reordenamiento de la cadena alquilo o de un control sintético incompleto. Debido a su comportamiento cromatográfico cercano y a su baja volatilidad, su determinación precisa suele requerir GC-MS o GC-FID con derivatización, y en matrices complejas puede emplearse LC-MS/MS para la caracterización confirmatoria.
