Telmisartan EP Impurity A, also designated Telmisartan Related Compound A, CAS 152628-02-9, is the desmethyl, deacidified benzimidazole precursor related to the biphenyl tetrazole antagonist telmisartan. Structurally it is 1,7′-dimethyl-2′-propyl-2,5′-bibenzimidazole, molecular formula C19H20N4, molecular weight 304.39 g/mol. It is typically associated with incomplete benzimidazole alkylation or intermediates retained from synthetic routes rather than oxidative degradation. Because it lacks the acidic pharmacophore of the active drug, its presence is assessed as a route-related organic impurity under pharmacopeial and ICH impurity control expectations.
