Erythromycin has a similar effect as that of gastrointestinal polypeptide motilin on gastrointestinal motility. It works by binding to motilin receptors and acts as a motilin agonist. Erythromycin has clinical application in patients with disturbed gastroduodenal motility like in diabetic gastroparesis.
