Description

Diclofenac Lactam, CAS 15362-40-0, is the cyclic lactam oxindole impurity corresponding to the intramolecular cyclization product of diclofenac-related intermediates, also described as 1-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)indolin-2-one. With molecular formula C14H9Cl2NO and molecular weight 278.13 g/mol, it is a structurally defined related compound reported in diclofenac sodium and potassium pharmacopoeial monographs, as well as in aceclofenac impurity profiling. Its presence may arise from synthesis side reactions or thermal or oxidative transformation of precursor arylacetic acids. Determination typically requires LC-MS/MS or HPLC with diode-array detection, and confirmatory characterization by MS and NMR.
