Difere do calcitriol pela inversão em C1, posicionando o grupo hidroxila em orientação β e alterando o reconhecimento pelo receptor e o comportamento metabólico. Essa impureza é tipicamente associada à epimerização durante a síntese ou o armazenamento de materiais secosteroides. Como a elucidação estrutural exige separação de epímeros muito próximos, a caracterização geralmente depende de LC-MS/MS, espectrometria de massas de alta resolução e HPLC quiral ou em fase reversa com suporte de RMN.
